Please take the time to read the Misuraca Family's story. There is
a young family we are trying to help that live in the area of
ClintonTownship. Kelly Misuraca, 35,
mother of three children, one age 7 and twins age 8, was diagnosed
July 30 with a mass on her pancreas. She is in need of immediate
surgery to remove this mass. Kelly had been experiencing severe
abdominal pain, constant nausea, and was having difficulty eating
and sleeping that led to her diagnosis. At the same time that
Kelly was diagnosed with this mass on her pancreas her 8 year old
son, Joey, started complaining of pain in both ears, his jaw,
head, and lower back. He was placed on antibiotics to treat a
possible ear & sinus infection, but the antibiotic that Joey was
taking did not seem to be helping his symptoms. Joey continued
feeling even worse, so he was taken to the emergency room where a
tumor was found (during a cat scan) that was located under his
nose with some eroding of the skull bone identified. Joey was then
transported to Children’s Hospital where additional testing was
performed and a second tumor was found in his chest. The final
results of all the testing indicated Joey had Stage IV Burkitt’s
Lymphoma. Burkitt’s Lymphoma is known to be a very aggressive form
of cancer and after a consultation with specialists at the
University of
Michigan, it was determined that
Joey must undergo a treatment plan that includes eight months of
chemotherapy. Due to the chemotherapy treatments scheduled and
Joey’s risk for infection caused by a lowered immune system he
will not be able to enter the third grade as planned and must be
home-schooled.
As if both Kelly and Joey’s
diagnosis’ weren’t heartbreaking enough, Kelly’s husband, Paul,
who is in the construction industry was just laid off due to lack
of work. Kelly was employed through the Chippewa Valley School
System but has been unable to return to work due to her illness
and subsequent need for immediate surgery and the extreme serious
condition of her son. The Misuraca family is surviving financially
on only unemployment benefits. This has created a major strain on
their budget with financial stress and worry about the payment of
monthly bills.
Neighbors and family have
assisted with food and some clothing, but this family is soon to
be faced with foreclosure on their home, unpaid utility bills, and
mounting medical bills. They are barely scraping enough together
for gas to make it back and forth to and from the hospital.
This family is in dire need of
financial assistance and any help would be greatly appreciated. If
